New blood test at Grafton Animal Hospital

During our staff meeting on Tuesday, October 27th, our representative from Idexx (the lab the provides our bloodwork results) gave a class on Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) .  This is a new test that helps diagnose chronic kidney disease earlier in cats and dogs.  The best part is that this test is automatically included in your pet’s wellness bloodwork at no additional cost to you.

Chronic kidney disease can affect 1 in 3 cats and 1 in 10 dogs over a lifetime.  In the past, your pet would have lost 75% of his/her kidney function before anything would appear abnormal on the bloodwork.  SDMA allows doctors to diagnose this problem months or years sooner, giving pet owners a better chance to manage kidney disease and help their pets live a longer life.

Chronic Kidney Disease is a leading killer of pets, especially cats.  This condition is manageable through diet and medication.  We are happy to be able to offer this innovative test, and thrilled that we do not have to increase the price of our wellness panel.  If your pet recently had a wellness panel, this test was included and will be included on all future tests.

If you have any questions about the SDMA test or have concerns about chronic kidney disease, just give any of the staff members at Grafton Animal Hospital a call at 898-8433.
